Every month, we seek to bring our readers insight from the worlds of home construction, home repair, and home maintenance straight from local Northwest Washington contractors in a segment we call “3 Questions.” Yep, you guessed it: we ask three questions, and the contractors answer them.
This month, we learn about roofing issues with Riley Wyatt, owner at Savage Roofing in Anacortes.
Q1: We’ve survived the winter, and spring is here! Do you have any tips or advice for homeowners about roof maintenance this time of year?
Now is the time to make sure your roof is in good shape. After a long wet winter, you should make sure your roof is free of debris, gutters are clean, and all of the shingles are in good shape. It is a good time to get your roof inspected by a professional. If your roof is older and needs replacement, it’s a good idea to talk to contractors earlier in the year as their schedules tend to fill up quickly.
Q2: Low slope roofs …they’re beautiful and architecturally pleasing. However, they definitely require more maintenance. What tips and advice do you have for homeowners of low slope roof systems?
Low slope roofs shed water slower, so it’s imperative to make sure the water is draining properly. Standing water on the roof is a leak waiting to happen. Make sure all drains are functioning properly. Depending on roof material you may see cracking or bubbling from the sun, although it may not be a problem now, it could lead to one in the future.
Q3: Can you please share some of your best tips and advice for homeowners about roof systems in the Pacific NW?
We get lots of wind and rain here in the NW, and if you notice any missing or loose shingles, you should schedule an inspection to make sure no water is getting into your home. We recommend you look at your roof up close at least once a year. Clean it, keep moss off not only to make it look better but to ensure water is shedding off properly. A regularly maintained roof will have the longest life. Lastly, it’s better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to your roof, take care of things before they get too big.
